EUROPE : Heavy rains and floods in western Europe have killed at least 200 people and left hundreds missing, officials say.
Authorities say at least 156 people have been killed, especially in Germany. The worst affected areas in Germany are the Rhineland-Palatinate. The Goblens Police and the German Interior Ministry said 110 people had been killed in the catastrophic floods.
Meanwhile, 46 people, including four firefighters, have been killed in Germany’s most populous neighboring northern Rhine-Westphalia state.
It is feared the death toll could rise further as floodwaters recede and rescue efforts are accelerating.
Meanwhile, President Angela Merkel visited the village of Schultz in the Rhineland-Palatinate state, one of the two worst-hit regions in West Germany.
Speaking to the people there, he said, “We are by your side.”
And, ‘It’s shocking. I can almost say that there are no words in German for the unleashed destruction. ‘
The government has confirmed that 31 people have been killed in heavy rains and floods in Belgium.Leave a comment
