EUROPE : Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least 55 places in western Europe, officials said. Fears have been expressed that this number could rise further.

In Germany’s worst-hit Rhineland-Palatinate state, the local government says 1,300 people are missing in the Ahrwehler district.

And in Germany alone, 49 people have been killed and many more are missing, police said.

The German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and northern Rhine-Westphalia have been hit hard by the floods. Buildings and vehicles here were swept away in the floods.

Six people have been killed in floods in neighboring Belgium. The mayor has urged people to leave Liege, Belgium’s third largest city after Brussels and Antwerp.

He also asked those unable to leave their homes to go to the upper floors of their buildings.

Luxembourg and the Netherlands have been hit hard. Many homes have been damaged by floods in the southern province of Limburg.
